There are two types of uterine cancer: cervical cancer, which forms near the entrance to the uterus, and body cancer, which forms at the back of the uterus. In Japan, about 80% of uterine cancers occur in the cervix, while most of the remaining 20% occur in the body.

Cervical cancer, which forms on the cervix, often develops from precancerous lesions （ an abnormality ） before it becomes cancerous, caused by infection with the human papillomavirus （ HPV ） through sexual intercourse. This cancer increases especially in the late 20s. Cervical cancer has few symptoms in its early stages. If cervical cancer is treated in its early stages, more than 90% of patients are cured. In advanced stages, a total hysterectomy may be necessary.
